The squadron was a component of the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, operating Lockheed U-2 spy planes in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Its motto, visible on the patch, is “TOWARD THE UNKNOWN”. Pilots from this unit were involved in high-altitude reconnaissance missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
