Description
Norma Jeane became Marilyn Monroe in 1946 after a studio executive, Ben Lyon, suggested the name for her first screen test at 20th Century Fox. Lyon picked the first name “Marilyn” because she reminded him of Broadway star Marilyn Miller. Norma Jeane herself suggested the last name “Monroe,” which was her mother’s maiden name. While her name change was effective for her career, she did not legally change her name to Marilyn Monroe until 1956.
